Behind the scenes: how a daily box is designed

Published October 16, 2026.

Daily Box is an independent project, designed and maintained by a single person. The boxes are not drawn by hand one at a time: they are assembled by a generator, with strict design rules, then checked by a solver that solves them. Here is how it works.

A data-driven engine

Each box is described by a data file: its faces, its mechanisms, its objects, its clues and its locks. The game engine, separate from the display, knows nothing about drawing: it applies the player's actions to that description. This is what lets the server replay your game to verify a result.

The design rules

A box follows rules that guarantee it is fair: one lock per module, no object given from the start, everything needed to open a box inside that box, a last step that is always a lock opened by a key taken from a drawer or a hatch. Notes are split into two or three fragments from different modules. Decoys are allowed, but never unfair: a legend may contain extra pairs, never a plate that lies.

Every box is solved before it is published

A validator solves the box to check that it is playable and to estimate its difficulty and duration. It does so on 200 different seeds, since the values of the box (codes, positions) depend on a seed specific to each player: the structure is the same for everyone, but your neighbour's solution is useless to you. If a single seed fails, the box is rejected.

A difficulty curve over the week

On Monday and Tuesday the box is easy (3 to 5 minutes), from Wednesday to Friday it is medium (6 to 10 minutes), and at the weekend it is hard (12 to 15 minutes), with up to three nested boxes. Boxes are drawn several days ahead, with a structure different from those around them. A day already started somewhere is never modified.

New mechanisms without breaking the old ones

New modules arrive one per week in the calendar, after their tutorial. A mechanism that has already been published is never modified: a change creates a new type, so that past boxes keep playing identically. Thirty-five tutorials, one per mechanism, teach you how to play.
