Codes, dials, keys, panels, clock face and rings

Published October 16, 2026.

Code mechanisms are the most common ones in the daily box. They ask for information found elsewhere, then a clean entry. Here is what sets them apart and how to approach them.

Keys, to be pressed in the order given by a clue.

Dials: from 2 to 5 digits

Each dial is set with the chevrons above and below. Codes have 2 to 5 digits, from 1 to 9, even though the dial also shows 0. Set all the dials before validating: a code is an attempt, and only a failed attempt is a mistake.

Keys: order matters

A keypad of 4 to 6 keys is played in a precise order, given by a clue. A mistake releases all the keys: you start again from the first one. Reread the clue before starting, and press calmly: going too fast is the first cause of mistakes.

Panels: composing with slats

Slats of 3 to 5 pieces slide to compose the code. Sliding them one at a time is safer than moving several: check each time what the clue shows.

Clock face: two hands, one notch at a time

Grab a hand and turn it around the clock face, one notch at a time, to put both hands on the code. The clock face is sometimes on a different face from its timer: find it before starting anything.

Rings: aligning symbols

Rings stop at each notch: align the symbols of the code. It is a symbol code, so a legend is waiting for you somewhere.

The drawer, the hatch and the lock

A drawer opens with a code: pulling it counts as an attempt, so only pull it once all the codes are entered. The last step of a box is always a lock that a key, taken from a drawer or a hatch, opens. If the key is late, a lock higher up in the chain is not solved yet.
